About Dr. Burkins
Dr. Jan Burkins is a full-time consultant and author of seven books for literacy educators. Her latest books, Shifting the Balance (K-2): 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Balanced Literacy Classroom, co-authored with Kari Yates, and Shifting the Balance (3-5): Bringing the Science of Reading into the Upper Elementary Classroom, co-authored with Kari Yates and Katie Egan Cunningham explore the ways neuroscience can help us make learning to read easier for students. With more than 30 years of experience as a literacy educator, Jan’s work has always been about recognizing our instructional blind spots and acknowledging the essential interplay between the print on the page and the meaning it makes available. Jan’s favorite work is with school and district literacy leaders as they determine the next steps for making learning to read easier for the children they support. Jan is the mother of four sons and lives in Athens, Georgia, with her husband and youngest son.
About Kari
Kari Yates is an author, speaker, and consultant with a passion for helping busy literacy educators thrive. Kari’s most recent books include Shifting the Balance (K-2): 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Balanced Literacy Classroom, co-authored with Jan Burkins, and Shifting the Balance (3-5): Bringing the Science of Reading into the Upper Elementary Classroom, co-authored with Jan Burkins and Katie Egan Cunningham. Kari has previously written two other books to support literacy educators. With experience as a classroom teacher, special education, Reading Recovery teacher, elementary principal, and district administrator, Kari has the experience and the expertise to help teachers and school leaders shape brighter outcomes for children, one thoughtful next step at a time. Kari has two daughters and four grandchildren and lives on the lake in Minnesota with her husband, John.
